Break The Glass

God bless TV in an open society. We can sit and watch the carnage in Ukraine, a privilege the average Russian does not seem to have. Instead they can watch their diminutive murderer of a leader carry on about unification and de-Nazification, perhaps singing Kumbaya in German.

This is unbearable. We spend more than $700 billion per year on defense, to watch a convoy make its way back into Ukraine, knowing full well what it plans to do: rape and murder women, destroy families, bomb hospitals and schools, kill and maim children.  And Trump’s evil “genius” friend brings out his ruthless general who was the butcher of Syrians, to teach Ukrainians to behave.

WHO THE HELL DOES HE THINK HE IS?

Biden and Blinken have done a brilliant job building an alliance and supplying Ukraine with all kinds of things. But not what Zelensky begs for in every speech: supremacy in the air. We have that, and demonstrated it in 20 years of trying to do the hopeless thing in Afghanistan. Now we have another and a feasible opportunity, to do what we promised Ukraine in conning them to give up the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world. Don’t worry, we promised. We’re with you.

With them when? And how?

The Europeans quite rightly don’t want to live in the cold and the dark. Little Vladi threatens to make that happen. But what about our friends the Saudis? Could they not send more oil, LPG and maybe some bone saws to defend freedom in the Ukraine? Is funding the hapless Jared Kushner with $2 billion a better bet? Would that change if Jared’s father-in-law were under criminal indictment? The Russians and Saudis are supplying the large amounts of Teflon needed to keep The Donald a free man. Is that likely to continue?

Yes, this is a rant. Because what’s happening so belies the promise after the Holocaust, Never Again. And why? Because Vladi has rattled his nuclear sword? He is a liar, pure and simple. Russia signed the Budapest Memorandum and became one of the three nations guaranteeing the sanctity of Ukraine and its borders. Guaranteed! Just four months ago he signed a joint statement with the leaders of five other nuclear weapons states—China, France, Britain, Northern Ireland and the US—affirming that “the avoidance of war between Nuclear Weapon States and the reduction of strategic risks as our foremost responsibilities.” It went on to say, “We affirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.” So having shown himself to be a bully, a liar, a murderer and a war criminal, should and must we tremble in our boots when he ominously threatens the darkest day the planet has seen?  Must we wait until he has further massacred a brave and democratic people to see him strutting around, the world’s richest man with the largest yacht and a nearly unblemished record as a conqueror?

No. It’s bullshit. In an emergency, break glass.
